Blended Learning

Blended Learning is the strategic combination of online and in-person learning. A common K-12 definition adds that the blend needs to provide students with some control over time, place, path, and/or pace (Graham, C. R., Borup, J., Short, C.R., & Archambault, L.).

  • Blended Learning requires that online learning enhances in-person learning and in-person leaning enhances online learning. Doing a series of disconnected activities, some online, and some in person, is not Blended learning.

  • Blended learning shifts ownership of the learning from teacher to students. Teacher rolls shift towards supporting students and teaching skills used to find information and away from telling the information to students.

  • Online learning offers experiences that would be to expensive or to dangerous to create as a real-world classroom experience. These unique opportunities do not replace traditional media such as books, but they can serve as memorable reinforcements and expansions of classroom learning and traditional media.
